Creating a Minimalist Home
Less is more…
A home is a place where we should be able to retreat to at the end of a long day, and we want your new Bay of Plenty Stroud Home to be a sanctuary, not a place of clutter that’s overrun with too much stuff.
Although minimalism can create a perception of cold and contemporary, it is possible to create a calm and sophisticated home with less using the ‘less is more’ approach while still injecting your personality.
But first things first, getting the basics right is key!
Create a neutral backdrop
It’s no secret that white walls will always be popular, white walls create calmness and they give you a great foundation to build your space from.
Minimalism and a lot of colour are not typically two things that you would put together because it often creates the opposite affect to the calm minimal space you’re aiming for but if you love colour just try and stick to three or four and try and make sure they have similar tones.
Work room by room
When you move into your new Stroud Home go into each room and close your eyes, think about what a minimalist room looks like, then open them.
Does your room match the idea that you visualised? If not, start by de-cluttering your space of all the small stuff.
Do you ever hear yourself saying ‘I need more storage’. It’s rare that you do, it’s more that you likely need to move some things along.

Create three categories: need – keep – remove, you will find that there are many items that you are unnecessarily holding onto that don’t hold a use or purpose.
Give everything a home
Once you have ‘created’ your minimalist room make sure you give everything a home – a place for everything and everything in its place.
It’s so simple really – when you use something put it back in it’s home.
We all know this is easier said than done, especially with kids, but it’s absolute key to creating less clutter and less work for you.
Be mindful of what you bring into your home
Everything is so accessible now it can be easy to get caught up in the trends and hype created around products and items you didn’t know you needed, and before you know it you have added to cart with a quick tap of the finger.
We encourage you to shop your own home first before you start browsing the (online) stores. If you find that you are in the purchase mode ask yourself these questions:
- Do I need this?
- Does it have a multi purpose?
- Is it quality?
If you answer no to any of these questions you should reconsider your purchase.
Styling tips for minimalism
Here are some helpful things you can do to add personality to your rooms through styling:
- Use things that have form and function, candles are perfect, they can look beautiful but also make your home smell beautiful.
- Use trays on coffee tables, bedsides, dining tables and bathrooms. They make things look super organised rather than having things all over the place. For example in your living room, use a tray to hold coasters, remotes, candles, flowers etc.
- Clear your walls, sometimes if you use too many pieces on a wall it can look cluttered, try using one large statement piece rather than multiple items, furthermore you don’t need to have something on every wall.
- Simple center pieces, to contradict the previous point about trays, try using a simple vase on your dining table.
- Use mirrors – we have talked about mirrors before. Mirrors create light, light creates spaces, spaces creates minimalism.
- Electronics and chords have to be one of the biggest eyesores of all time. See if you can somehow remove the need to have these visible. There are some amazing products on the market that can help here.
All of these factors can help make your new Stroud home the beautiful place you want to escape to each day.
